Tree Whispering

I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Jim Conroy and Ms. Basia Alexander at the University of Connecticut last month. Below is an entry I wrote for their exercises:

My main goal in reading this book is to communicate better with nature through trees so that I can create harmony between humans and nature through landscape architecture. From my observations, man (in America and perhaps Western culture in general) views nature as disorderly chaos in which we need to create order from. I completely disagree; we simply do not grasp the complexity of nature’s order, structure, and intelligence. However, if we develop the humility to listen to nature as a teacher rather than impose our incomplete knowledge onto it, we can learn so much - we can better understand nature as well as ourselves, as we are a part of nature - and thus create integrated systems to meet the needs of humans and nature.
